We need to talk

At some point, I seem to have forgotten why I originally wanted to become an engineer.
Why did I want to be an engineer? I wanted to create and build something of my own. I wanted to build my own fortress so as not to be shaken by the world around me. That is why I became an engineer. I believe the motivation for most engineers and developers is probably similar. The intoxicating, drug-like sense of accomplishment that comes from creating something—once you taste that achievement, it is hard to turn back.
However, it seems an era has arrived where the engineering profession is no longer a solid fortress, but a sandcastle that could collapse at any moment. Engineers are no longer safe, either. We could have taken the easy road, so why did we choose the uncomfortable path of an engineer? Didn’t we choose it because the immense satisfaction it brings outweighs the discomfort? Yet, from a certain point onward, it seems engineers have also started looking for the easy way out. And now, there appear to be more engineers taking the comfortable path than those walking the difficult one.
We know that the direction and life cycle of all things is not a smooth upward curve, but a staircase graph that endlessly fluctuates up and down. Yet, despite knowing this, we all dream of that smooth, continuous rise. At some point, even the smartest people started chasing this illusory graph.
But I do not believe in it. A perfectly smooth upward curve cannot exist, nor should it. If it does exist, it is merely a trick of the gods; it is a trajectory that has no place in human affairs. When everyone else is dreaming empty dreams, the ones who face the uncomfortable reality and hold their ground are the ones whose true value shines the most—especially in times like these. I believe society needs these kinds of people now more than ever.
Therefore, I have decided to follow the systems humanity has built over thousands of years. Because I firmly believe that the humanity which has survived this long is neither one-dimensional nor solely outcome-driven, I feel no need to forcefully conform or change myself. Rather, I believe that one day, everyone will wake from this dream and remember the greatness of humanity once again. I hold onto the hope that humanity is not so shallow as to watch monkeys or parrots mimicking humans and desperately wish to become like them.
